The best book I read this year was If Nobody Speaks of Remarkable Things by Jon McGregor, but, like most books I read, it isn’t a new book, so strictly speaking can’t be included in the best of 2009 … however, it is soooo good, I’m still mentioning it!

Gigs – Marmaduke Duke at The Brudenell Social Club Leeds
Biffy Clyro supported by Pulled Apart by Horses and Manchester Orchestra at Rock City, Nottingham
Sucioperro at The Royal Park Cellars in Leeds, The Basement Bar in York, supporting Nine Black Alps at Manchester Academy and The Leadmill Sheffield and finally at King Tuts in Glasgow followed closely by an acoustic set in Avalanche Records the next day – that’s a lot of Sucio, no?
Kill Chaos and Your Army at West Street Live, Sheffield
Watch This Fire Spread in – loads of places in Sheffield! – The Harley, The Green Room, The Grapes
The Hostiles at The Redhouse Sheffield (twice)

Theatre – not a sausage – no, that isn’t a play, that is the state of theatre this year…

Films – Slumdog Millionaire, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Nowhere Boy, Coraline, Star Trek, Watchmen, Inglourious Basterds, The Hangover

Other amazing stuff – Ghosts, the Sam Taylor Wood exhibition of photos at The Bronte Parsonage, Haworth
